Marysville Division 7 Premiers
Below is a week by week report on how the Marysville Bowls team went about their Final Series.
Section Semi Final
In the Section Semi-Final we came up against one of our old Yarra Valley Rivals Yarra Junction at home. We had not played them throughout the Home & Away season due to washouts, so we were unsure what to expect from them but by all means we did not take them lightly. We started fromidable will all rinks comfortably up and showing why we were the standout performance all year being 87-17 up just after 50 ends. We went on to have a comfortable 148-35 win which was one of our biggest wins throughout the season.
Rink Results: (Troy Pye 40 bt S.Evans 8, Beau Simmons 33 bt N.Wal 8, Ben Simmons 40 bt R.Ring 8 & Mark Simmons 35 bt R.Kerford 11.)
Section Grand Final
After winning our Semi-Final we were then into the Section Grand Final who we would face Chirnside Park at Ringwood. The game started in very similiar form to Yarra Junction, Marysville were determined to start well which we did. All four rinks were performing well and on top of their opponents, we went into lunch being 40 shots up. We continued to show our from and never looked back with a comprehensive 144-64 win overall. This was the second Grand Final Flag for the club where previous was won in 1972-1973!
Rink Results: (Beau Simmons 38 bt B.Gorsuch 18, Troy Pye 42 bt A.Marshall 10, Ben Simmons 41 bt G.Bunting 14 & Mark Simmons 23 bt M.Alday 22.)
Division Quarter Final
Marysville had been drawn to play Healesville at Ivanhoe, we went into the Quarter Final without three of our top players(Dave Stirling, Troy Pye & Josh Pye). We were kindly lent a Substitute from Warburton(Ron Hall) who we thank for their support as it was such late notice with Dave Ill & unable to play. Knowing this would be a challenge without these players we all would have to perform well to get over the line. Marysville couldn't have asked for a better start, being 15 up after just 20 ends. Healesville put up a courageous fight back and saw the Marysville side only being 6 up at lunch time. Marysville re-grouped and came out with what one would describe "Flawless" result, with the rink of Alan Phillips, Chris Roberts, Ron Hall(Sub) & Ben Simmons collecting up a 6 on the first! This gave the Marysville side much momentum and the intensity lifted from there, who comfortable ran out winners 89-83..
Rink Results: (Ben Simmons 28 bt R. Patterson 15,Beau Simmons 20 lost to B. Brooks 24, Alan Boyd 22 bt B. Brown 15 & Mark Simmons 19 lost to R. Fisher 29.)
Division Semi Final
Marysville were now faced up against a determined St.Kilda outfit who comfortably ran over Oakleigh by 72 shots the previous day. There were mixed emotions from the Marysville side as we weren't aware what St.Kilda would bring to the table as we hadn't played them previously. With the game starting off with such great intensity with St.Kilda being highly vocal & confident, Marysville were in trouble early. But we gradually fought our way back into the game to open up at 12 shot lead into Lunch break. Once again, the Marysville side came out after a meeting and started in blistering form. With the Alan Phillips(Barra) & Chris Roberts(Heartbreaker) setting up their rink with 21 unanswered shots. Beside him both Mark & Beau Simmons rink kept pushing along to win comfortable. The stand out was Alan Boyd's rink of Shep Morehu, Pat Sund & Alan Daniel who fought back to only lose by 3 on their rink after being 14 down at one stage, this gave Marysville a comfortable win overall.Marysville won 147-62.
Rink Results: ( Alan Boyd 26 lost to J. Mylonas 29, Beau Simmons 37 bt S. Vanderpas 12, Ben Simmons 41 bt P. Loosmore 13 & Mark Simmons 43 bt P.Wharram 8.)
DIVISION GRAND FINAL
The Grand Final had the two biggest standouts for the Season competeting against each other for the Title, Marysville v Warburton. Marysville with unfortunately loosing Jenny Tirant to another tournament went in being the underdogs. This was proven by a Member of the Warburton Bowling Club who was confident enough to throw a $200 bet on the game, which was proudly declined.
The Grand Final was bound to be a high standard of bowls as these two clubs had previously fought off for a similiar title in 2009 where Warburton prevailed by 25 shots, the crowd was not going to be disappointed! The game started off as anyone would have expected, Warburton were on top and go to a lead overall by 12 after 32 ends. Warburton were in control of all rinks and started to look like they were going to push on to a larger margin, but there was a sudden change in momentum and Marysville started to claw back the margin and eventually hit the lead, which enabled them to lead into lunch 46-42 after 51 ends.
The two sides came out after lunch and both were determined to get on top of the other, but it was Marysville who prevailed and pushed their lead out to 29 in the next 29 ends(84-55 atfer 80 ends).Warburton made one last burst with getting as close to 11 shots with 10 ends left, but once again the Marysville side pushed away and eventual winners 103-75 after the 100 ends.
Rinks Results;
Beau Simmons(s), Josh Pye, Pat Sund, Janice Dunston drew with S.Caneva, P.Byrne, M.Rose & S. Lord 25-25
Ben Simmons(s), Dave Stirling, Chris Roberts, Alan Phillips bt P.Caneva, B.Gillies, K.Thomas & N.Goodman 34-18
Troy Pye(s), Alan Boyd, Bill Nevin, Shep Morehu lost to B.Griffiths, B.Hall, R.McHail & S.Freestone 20-24

Update for the Marysville Bowls Club! ! !
It has been a long time since anyone has updated any news regarding the Marysville Bowling Club. I thought i would just briefly comment on Pennant, State Events and Club Events.
Pennant:
Firstly I’ll like to start off with Pennant, as you all are aware Bowls Vic put Marysville/Warburton/Healesville/Yarra Junction & Cockatoo into Division 7 for Saturday Pennant & Division 5 for Tuesday Pennant. This hasn't changed the way we are bowling, we are comfortably sitting on top of the ladder with two wins, 26 points and 400 shots clear of second spot on Saturdays! The Tuesday Pennant are sitting in 4th position and play the top 3 teams in the last games which gives them a chance of finishing on top providing they win all three! I have been impressed with many bowlers this year who have improved their bowling to the next level, it has been noticeable as they are practicing on a regular basis. We hope to keep this form up and hopefully meet Warburton in the final for the Division 7 title!!
State Events:
Marysville have proved to be highly competitive in the new Group 12, with either winning or the runner-ups in three disciplines. Paul Tirant, Ben Simmons & Mark Simmons(19-11) won the Group 12 Triples and will be competiting at Darebin between the week of Saturday 9 to Thursday 14 April, 2010. Would like to wish them best of luck!! Paul Tirant, Beau Simmons, Mark Simmons & Ben Simmons(9-19) were also the Runner-Ups in the Group 12 Fours to P.Middleton who's from Mitcham. Ben Simmons & Mark Simmons were Runner-Ups in the Group 12 Pairs(12-21).
Janice Dunston ended up with the 60 & Over Singles for Group 13 Ladies and i would like to personally congratulate her for her efforts. She has represented Marysville & herself well!
Janice Dunston, Nolene (RU Bowling Club) & Jenny Tirant were the Runner-Ups in the State Triples to Joyce Lindores (Australian Representive), that is an enormous effort and yet again the ladies represented Marysville well.
Club Events:
Marysville has completed both the Ladies & Men Championships, with both Janice Dunston & Ben Simmons being successful. Janice beat Jenny Tirant in the final in a high standard final. Janice won two of her games at Group level but was unsuccessful in the third. Congratulations Janice and that's yet another great effort !!
Ben beat Dave Stirling in another high standard final, Ben got to a great start and consolidated on that leading 19-9, but everyone knowing Dave for his fighting efforts he put up a late charge! The scores were at 21-14 at one stage but Ben prevailed getting consecutive doubles. Ben was also unsuccessful at Group level being defeated by Matt Creighton(Yarra Glen) in the round of 16(14-25).
